Frequently Asked Questions

When do practices start?聽We don鈥檛 exactly have 鈥減ractices鈥, but we have coaching or preparation for the different events.聽Practices will begin the first week of November.聽Each student’s practice time depends on their specific events. Students are also expected to spend time preparing outside of school, especially if they are on the Varsity time.

When will the team be chosen?聽 We will make final team selections in December. Please keep in mind that we often have upwards of 60 students interested in Sci Oly, and there are only 45 spots on the team (15 varsity and 30 alternates). As a result, not everyone will “make the team”. The head coaches make as many matches as possible between the events that each student is interested in, the student鈥檚 schedule, the event coach鈥檚 schedule, and need for each team to have a pair of competitors in each event.聽We can have one Varsity Team and聽two Alternate Teams 鈥 and each student on an Alternate Team聽does聽compete at the state competition!聽If you do not qualify for the team, you are still welcome to come to practices for fun, to learn more, and to have a better chance of earning a spot on next year’s team!

What is required of team members?聽Science Olympians must come to coaching sessions and must follow through on independent preparation as well.聽 All team members聽MUST聽attend one or two coaching sessions per week in the fall (through December), and two or three sessions per week from January until the competition in mid-March.聽 Varsity AND Alternate students may not miss more than 2 consecutive practices for any of their events– otherwise, your spot may be given to another student. Students on the team should also plan to go to a Saturday morning 鈥減ractice tournament鈥 in December and/or January (details TBA), and must also be committed to going to the all-day state competition. (On that day, we leave Diamond on a bus at 7:00聽am, and get back around 6:00聽pm.).

Is the state competition the only 鈥渕eet鈥?聽Yes, but we are currently looking into attending one or two practice events!Parent and High School volunteers are needed to help with the team!聽Please e-mail Annabel聽Stoler (astoler@lexingtonma.org) or Ken Dautrich (kdautrich@lexingtonma.org)聽if you are available to help.

(Please go to the national organization鈥檚 home page 鈥撀www.soinc.org聽鈥 to learn about the organization as a whole.)
